Why Should I Use Products that are Sulphate-Free?

When I developed the Statements in Hair line of color retention products, I felt it was an opportunity to introduce my clients to the importance of using products without potentially harmful chemicals. The big culprits are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate, both are used extensively in the making of soaps, shampoos, detergents, toothpastes and other products that “foam up.” A report published in the Journal of The American College of Toxicology in 1983 showed that concentrations as low as 0.5% could cause irritation and concentrations of 10-30% caused skin corrosion and severe irritation. There is a possible link to cancer as well, however the research is incomplete. Why take the risk when there are so many wonderful products without SLS and other harmful irritants? Statements in Hair’s line of color retention products contain no Sulfates or… This information is clearly marked on our products’ labels. However there are products labeled as “natural” that may still contain SLS or SLES. Just make sure you read the label carefully before making a purchase!
